Dr. Caroline Kaltefleiter is a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence. She also received the Faculty Connection Award for dedicated work with students beyond the classroom. She works to discuss issues of race, class and gender in her classes and media projects, and was awarded an honorary Kente Clothe in 2020 for work to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. She serves as Executive Producer and Faculty Advisor to the campus radio station, 90.5 WSUC-FM.
Her teaching incorporates project based learning and community engagement. From 2013-2016, she lead a series of classes in COM 335 Issues in Digital Culture and COM 350 New Communication Media to design and execute an integrated media campaign to help raise $1.5 million dollars to save the Wickwire Pool from closure in Cortland, New York. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Kaltefleiter, along with student reporters and members of the WSUC-FM staff produced several sixty minute broadcasts titled, COVID Candid Conversations, providing updates on the pandemic and clarification of COVID policies at SUNY Cortland. In Spring 2022, she worked with student journalists to produce a special broadcast on the “War in Ukraine.” Students participants in her classes and media projects have gone on to secure positions at media start-ups, community media organizations, as well as local and national media outlets.
